In the ongoing South African Cricket team tour of Srilanka, South African pace bowler Vernon Philander has been fined 75 per cent of his match fee for tampering with the ball during the third day of the first test against Sri Lanka.
Philander has accepted the ball tempering charge. Remember that this is 2nd time where South African team has been accused of ball tempering. Last time Faf du Plessis was abetted by Philander and fined for ball tampering during test series against Pakistan in October, 2013.
With such lame punishments, ICC seems to advertising an option to Cricket teams where for a few dollars penalty a cheat of Ball tempering is at their disposal that can go a long way in dictating final outcome of a match. As a Cricket viewer, I have been duped. All time while watching the match for last 3 days, I thought that 2 teams are playing on same fields with fair chance of winning. But that was not the case; a team was cheating in the field but also with all cricket viewers/lovers.
When I compare these Ball tempering events with Spot fixing scandal (2010, Pakistan- England series), I infer that later had less ill effect on cricket then the formal charge. A few No-Balls had no significant impact on the outcome of the match. Infect Muhammad Aamir was awarded ‘Man of the Series’ for his impact full bowling. Given the humble background from which these players were associated, ICC response should have been considerate rather it convicted the players on Match fixing punishment, which is obviously a much bigger sin, as Spot fixing punishments were not defined at that time under ICC laws.
Any unbiased Cricket viewer can authenticate that, Muhammad Asif and Muhammad Amir bowling pair was a treat to watch. They could do magic with the ball and had unmatchable Art. World Cricket bowling has lost 2 great legends with their exits. Both had good 10 years of cricket left in them. Overall the lost is of Cricket.
