Suspension on Death penalty in Pakistan

The idea of abolition death sentence is advocated by Amnesty International. In Pakistan suspension on execution of death penalty was imposed by President Asif Ali Zardari in June 2008 for an initial period of 5 years. After the exhaustion of the period in 2012, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif under the pressure of European Union (EU) and other International Human right activists directed the interior ministry to halt executions till further orders.

The supporters of suspension beliefs that Pakistan judicial and police inquiry system is too incompetent that does not guarantee a fair trial hence a sacred human life can be sacrificed where there exists doubts.

The opponents argue that if death sentence is not available how courts and society can convict offenders of heinous crimes like terrorism, treason, rape and jail break? How confidence of aggrieved party can be restored in judicial system so that they may not take law in their hand?

Pakistan is combating with many social ills and it needs this grievous punishment to convict those who carryout terrorism and blood feuds in our society. A person who attacks on our sensitive installments and security personal actually wage war against this country and should be rightly treated with death sentence. Otherwise with any other lame treatment we are compromising the survival of this country.

Jail break events of Bannu and Dera Ismail khan needs to be mentioned here. Many high value criminals like Adnan Rasheed of Tehrek Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were arrested in those jails. The judicial system was in halt considering how to treat these criminals due to abeyance of Death penalty. But the terrorist did not stop they attacked the jail killed many policeman and nearly 700 criminal fled from the jail. The event smudged the justice system of Pakistan and the morale of our security forces deeply shattered.

Sanity demands immediate restoration of Death sentence in Pakistan. If the trial system of country is bad it should be improved instead of aborting Death punishment. Also courts need to be extra judicious and cautious when ordering this punishment.

Ramzan: Giveaway TV Shows

In this year’s Ramzan, the Tv media is inundated with shows that are giving away free commodities to audience on mere anchor’s impulse or for answering simple question. TRP of such programs are on high for example Ramzan Pakistan hosted by Aamir Liaquat and Jeeto Pakistan hosted by Fahad Mustafa are among the toppers. The programs producers maintain that since Ramzan is a month of happiness; they are also distributing happiness by prize giveaways. A question that lingers in viewer’s mind is how one can attend these TV shows as audience. Major section believes that is all up to personal relations that one may attend such shows. Hence if people are getting expensive gifts namely Mobiles, Laptops, LCDS, Motor Bikes, Cars e.t.c. just because they have more reach is surely enhancing the imbalance that exist b/w affluent and deprived in our society. Remember that a person is poor due to this very reason that he has no access to opportunities in society. He does not know the ...

Ball tempering v/s Spot fixing

In the ongoing South African Cricket team tour of Srilanka, South African pace bowler Vernon Philander has been fined 75 per cent of his match fee for tampering with the ball during the third day of the first test against Sri Lanka. Philander has accepted the ball tempering charge. Remember that this is 2nd time where South African team has been accused of ball tempering. Last time Faf du Plessis was abetted by Philander and fined for ball tampering during test series against Pakistan in October, 2013. With such lame punishments, ICC seems to advertising an option to Cricket teams where for a few dollars penalty a cheat of Ball tempering is at their disposal that can go a long way in dictating final outcome of a match. As a Cricket viewer, I have been duped. All time while watching the match for last 3 days, I thought that 2 teams are playing on same fields with fair chance of winning. But that was not the case; a team was cheating in the field but also with all cricket viewe...

Malaysian Flight MH17 Air Crash

On July 17, 2014, a Malaysia Airlines passenger plane MH17 crashed in Ukraine, near Russian border. There were nearly 280 passengers and 15 crew members on board. Sources believe that the Plane has been hit by a missile when it was flying at an altitude of 33,000 feet. Ukrainian officials and pro-Russian rebels accuse each other of this incident. Indeed this is very sad event. Sanity extends its condolences to families of people who have lost their lives in this tragic event. An unbiased immediate inquiry of this incident is demanded so actual mischiefs be trialed and given due punishment. It is hard to infer reason why such cruel action has been taken by any source. The passengers and crew members were innocent and not a party in any conflict. The first action which many Airlines have taken after this missile strike is to avoid Airspaces of Ukraine which will definitely hurt Ukraine’s interest. The area, in which debris of victim Plane is found, is under...
